The Rapid Access Work Injury Clinic is a collaboration between a group of specialist rehab providers led by leading Brisbane neurosurgeon, Dr Peter Lucas. The clinic and programs have been initiated to streamline the referral process to reduce wait times for assessment, treatment and surgery, if required, for patients with spinal conditions. The surgeon group has an established relationship with the rehabilitation specialists and physiotherapy teams and therefore will work together closely to triage new referrals.
At the fortnightly clinics at both Spring Hill and Capalaba, patients will:
- be assessed by both neurosurgeon and physiotherapist.
- receive detailed reports from both outlining
the assessment findings, diagnosis, management recommendations.
- receive any recommended further diagnostic tests, which are then sent to the referring health care provider and any other health care providers involved, including other surgeons, if necessary.
- receive a Suitable Duties Plan for yourself and the insurer and employer.
Differential diagnosis, particularly with Low Back Pain, can be challenging and complex. Although low back pain is most often related to benign underlying patho-anatomical causes that are not amenable to surgery, back pain can be a common presenting symptom of many potentially serious spinal or medical problems. With this increased complexity of clinical cases comes a greater level of professional responsibility and risk.
The Rapid Access Work Injury Clinic seeks to make sure we are able to more comprehensively assess, in as short a time period as possible, and to help patients to expedite the process of engaging a suitable recovery pathway.
